A man on his way to catch a flight was killed in a car accident along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near UWI, St Augustine Campus at around 9.30 am on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Andy Alleyne, 41, of 81 Emerald Drive, Diego Martin. Alleyne was employed at event planning company Wide Eyed Productions Ltd.

Road Safety co-ordinator Constable Brent Batson was on the scene and said Alleyne and his two passengers were heading to the Piarco International Airport. He said the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit the traffic light pole and died upon impact. The two passengers made it out alive and were given medical attention in an ambulance before being taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. They were treated for minor injuries.

When Newsday visited the scene, Alleyne's Jaguar sports car was facing west in the eastbound lane. The car was badly damaged, with most of the destruction at the front of the car and where Alleyne was seated in the driver's side. The front fender, both doors and rear panel were ripped off the car and the airbags were also deployed.

Alleyne's arm was severed upon impact. Oil and other fluids leaked out of the car and onto the road.

People from the area came to see what was going on while officers and firefighters were trying to decipher how to get the body out.

One man was seen sitting in the grass and crying silently; he didn't venture closer to the scene while media was there.

All the traffic going east was diverted to the turn off near the UWI lights, where the traffic barely flowed.

At around 10.30 am, Batson said officers were still in the process of contacting the next of kin and were removing the destroyed vehicle and body from the road.

Batson added, “We are asking persons to please, take their time on the road as these are the consequences sometimes often unintended, and we are going into the New Year festivities as well and we’re really hoping to see persons support our road safety to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring.”

This was the 88th road fatality for the year.
