Father’s Day staycation in Trinidad and Tobago
The term staycation has become a catch phrase that has been much more appreciated in Trinidad and Tobago since the start of the covid19 pandemic in 2020. We are witnessing a resurgence of appreciation for all of the wonderful things that our country has to offer. Here are some ideas of where you can take your dad to thank him for all that he has done for you and your family.
Turtle watching
Father's Day, which is internationally celebrated in many countries on the third Sunday in June, also happens to coincide with turtle nesting season here in TT. The sight of majestic leatherback turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs is an awe-inspiring experience and makes for a great and slightly unorthodox adventure to gift your dad on his special day. Please note that to go turtle watching at either Grand Riviere or Matura in Trinidad you will need to first obtain a permit from the Forestry Division.
Paramin picnic at La Vigie
The newly renovated La Vigie lookout located in Saut D'eau Paramin is home to some of the most breath-taking views that Trinidad has to offer. The facilities at this location went through a major upgrade this year and now include: four observation decks, two cooking huts, bathroom facilities, as well as on-location security. So pack some good food and a drink or two and treat your dad to a relaxing afternoon picnic surrounded by the natural beauty of the North Coast.
Caroni Swamp for dinner
The Caroni Swamp has always been a major attraction for both visitors and locals alike, and the sight of hundreds of scarlet ibis returning to their homes at sunset is one that has caused many a visitor to the swamp to fall in love with TT all over again. One exciting idea for this Father's Day is to consider taking your dad out for a dinner sunset tour of the Caroni Bird Sanctuary where you can enjoy a gourmet meal surrounded by the incredible wildlife of the Caroni River.
On a hike
One of the benefits of living in a place like TT is that there is no shortage of beautiful scenery for us to enjoy. Although we might associate holiday's like Father's Day with more passive activities such as going to a restaurant or having a few drinks, why not consider spending this year taking your dad out on the trails? Of course, heading out on a hike during rainy season might be iffy, but it also means that the waterfalls are sure to be spectacular. Just make sure to check the weather forecast before you head out, and of course it's always best to go with a certified guide.
An afternoon cafe visit
Coffee shops are experiencing an unprecedented boom here on the islands with a new one popping up almost every month. Unlike restaurants, there's really no time limit when you visit a cafe, which makes for a wonderfully unhurried way to celebrate the occasion. Many of these cafes also offer small sweet and savoury bites to eat, and there relaxed, casual atmospheres make for a great location to celebrate with your dad over a hot cup of coffee or tea. All the better if you can find a place that offers some good local coffee as TT, after all, is home to some of the finest coffee in the world.
