Sarwan steps down as West Indies selector

CRICKET WEST Indies’ (CWI) men and youth teams' selector Ramnaresh Sarwan has resigned from his post for personal reasons.

CWI confirmed this on Monday. Sarwan was appointed in January but recently told CWI  he is no longer able to continue.

CWI director of cricket Jimmy Adams thanked the former West Indies and Guyana captain for his contributions during his appointment.

Adams said he was disappointed that Sarwan was unable to continue but he “fully understands and accepts his reasons” and hopes “he will be able to contribute to West Indies cricket in some capacity in the future.”

As a result, CWI will recruit a selector as soon as possible through a competitive process, based on established criteria.

CWI’s statement read, “The aim will be to complete this process in the shortest possible time so that a suitable candidate can complete the selection panel in carrying out its duties.

“Robert Haynes, who is current lead selector of the men’s youth selection panel and former interim chairman of selectors, will act as replacement until a suitable full-time candidate is appointed. Robert will work on the selection panel alongside men’s team lead selector Dr Desmond Haynes and coach Phil Simmons."

The West Indies team are currently touring the Netherlands for the first ever One-Day International against Netherlands, as part of the ICC ODI Super League.

As a player, Sarwan played 81 Test matches, 181 ODIs and 18 T20 Internationals for West Indies between 2000 and 2013. He scored 5,842 runs in Tests, including 15 centuries and 5,804 runs in ODIs, including five centuries.

He was a member of the West Indies team which won the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy in 2004.
