Past Cricketers Society raise funds for ex-national players

CHAIRMAN of the Past Cricketers Society (PCS) Justice Prakash Moosai said the support by the national community exceeded his expectations after a fund raising initiative was held at the Queen's Park Oval in St Clair, on Saturday.

Among the other members of the PCS are former West Indies youth captain Colin Murray, former TT cricketer Lester Cassimy and former West Indies Women's cricketer Ann Browne-John. The PCS had a curry-que in an effort to raise funds for past TT cricketers dealing with health issues.

"We are very impressed (with the turn-out). We originally were thinking of sales of about five or six hundred and as it turned out we have sold 1,300 tickets so that the response from the public has been overwhelming."

The curry-que began at 11.30 am and when Newsday spoke to Moosai it was after 3 pm.

Moosai said the PCS is also aiming to help those affected by the covid19 pandemic. "The reason that it has been overwhelming is because of the objectives this year...normally the objective (is mainly) to try to assist past cricketers who have some challenges particularly medical challenges, but this year we thought because of the covid19 pandemic we would widen our charitable purpose and play our part from a national perspective to try and contribute and help people in need."

Moosai said the PCS contributed 180 lunches on Saturday to the Living Water Community among other charitable organisations.

Moosai said one of the cricketers who will benefit from the latest fundraiser is former TT and West Indies cricketer Charlie Davis who recently had surgery.

Moosai added that former TT cricketer Leo John is experiencing some health issues. He said Terry Mills, another former national cricketer, has decided to sponsor John a wheelchair.

"If it is we can assist primarily our past national cricketers, even our past club cricketers, we think we would have served our core purpose."
