Matura Little Free Library opens

A new Little Free Library in Matura has joined the worldwide trend of sharing books and creating communities of readers.

Local NGO Let’s Read collaborated with the Matura community to establish a children’s Little Free Library, a media release said. Let’s Read said it hopes the library "will bring a little more joy, connection and more books to the children of Matura."

Little Free Library is a non-profit organisation that inspires a love of reading, builds community and improves book access by fostering neighbourhood book exchange boxes. These boxes play an essential role by providing access to books and encouraging a love of reading in areas where books are scarce.

Little Free Libraries have become a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number more than 100,000 around the world in over 100 countries from Europe to South America, the release said.

The Matura Little Free Library has created a great deal of excitement and Let’s Read said it has received an overwhelming response, with over 50 requests to facilitate the establishment of Little Free Libraries all over TT.

"Many children live in neighbourhoods that lack easy access to books, as such Let’s Read is determined to place libraries where they can make an impact and transform the reading culture," the release said.

Let’s Read, which is registered in TT, aims to promote the joy of reading so that children experience increased literacy. It promotes early literacy through increased access to books and libraries. It also supports the professional development of teachers to inspire a community of readers.
