[UPDATED] Sando City Corp worker shot dead in Marabella
A labourer with the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC), Hayden Smith, 42 was shot ten times while sitting in a car outside his home at Old Train Line, Marabella on Saturday.
Marabella police said a lone gunman shot Smith at about 9.15 pm and left him for dead before running away. Police are now viewing tapes from a closed circuit television camera system, which captured the murder.
The video, which is now making the rounds on social media, showed a man, dressed in a white hooded jacket, walking up to the vehicle and firing several shots into Smith's car before running away.
Smith was the younger brother of former local government councillor La-Verne Smith.
Saddened at the loss, La Verne said she spoke to Smith two days ago and she warned him about the covid19 virus.
"I told him to be careful and to make sure he has hand sanitiser and to try and stay home during this time of the crisis."
La Verne said she could not imagine why anyone would murder her brother.
“He was a humble person who cared for his family."
Smith was a father of three teenagers including two girls and one boy.
La Verne and her two brothers grew up as orphans having lost both their parents to illness.
"We were taken care of by our aunt, Gloria Calliste who is the sister of former Calypso Monarch Leroy Calliste (Black Stalin)," La Verne said
Smith's murder to took place within hours of another man being shot and killed at Battoo Avenue, Marabella. Marabella resident, Desmond Edwards was chased and killed by gunmen at 10.30am on Saturday.
Homicide officers are now investigating both cases. Police could not determine whether the two cases were linked. The number of people murdered for the year now stands at 147.
