Online crime reporting
THE EDITOR: The TTPS are engaged in trying various methods to improve the service which is quite commendable. In a recent symposium the CoP Mr Gary Griffith announced a plan of implementing online reporting which is already being done in other countries. With this I do have a concern, not with the idea but the effectiveness of such a system in TT.
I make reference to domestic violence and child abuse which is at a place where urgent attention is needed. I do understand that this will give officers more time to be on patrol on our streets which is excellent. My concern is the timeliness in dealing with matters coming through a system. There is the possibility that this system may not be checked daily, people simply forget, “out of sight out of mind.”
Worst-case scenario the “delete” button for convenience, what may work elsewhere can be a challenge in TT. Permit me to suggest that this must only be on a trial basis, properly monitored to see its effectiveness.
When it is all said and done every crime committed is important and must be treated in this manner. I would hate to think that domestic violence and crime committed against children are left lying there on a system and not being urgently attended too. Let us not doubt this great possibility. People must be held accountable.
