NJAC takes middle path on Sandals

THE National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) saw positives and negatives in the recent pull-out of Sandals from Tobago where it was in talks with the Government to establish an upscale resort at Buccoo. “While NJAC is of the view that the recent withdrawal of Sandals from a major project in Tobago is no cause for celebration, at the same time the people of TT must be commended for their vigilance and sense of national awareness that was shown in this issue.”

NJAC, in a statement, said the saga showed people acting according to the very advice of "mind your business" offered by the Prime Minister in a recent national address.

While the MOU between the Government and Sandals was not a binding contract, NJAC viewed it as having significance to spell out the intent of the parties involved and represents their commonality of purpose. “An MOU, therefore, holds significant weight in the process of trade and agreements.

“The citizens of TT, therefore, cannot be faulted for seeking information on the details of an MOU that may involve the spending of billions of taxpayers’ dollars.”

NJAC said citizens were exercising their constitutional right to what ought to be public information on public spending.

“This is a fundamental principle of our democracy that must be preserved at all times and must be respected by all, whether local or foreign.

“As NJAC has been saying since 1970 the people must exercise effective control over the economy. In doing so, the people must be involved in all areas of the planning process and be allowed to participate in the major decisions of National Development.”

The party called for a review of the national policy that governs all foreign investment involving the Government and state institutions.

“In light of recent developments involving Sandals International and governments in the region, including TT, NJAC believes that there is an urgent need to address the issue of foreign investment as it relates to sustainable development and the national patrimony in the Caribbean.”
