Judge: Don’t get in trouble over women

TWO Appeal Court judges yesterday advised a San Raphael farmer not to get himself in trouble over women.

Justices of Appeal Alice Yorke-Soo Hon and Mark Mohammed varied Cordell Glenn’s sentences for disorderly behaviour and assault by beating, from two prison terms of 30 days and six weeks to a fine of $200 and a bond for two years. Glenn challenged the sentences imposed on him by a magistrate, complaining that they were unduly severe.

He was unrepresented at his trial, and at his appeal said the magistrate didn’t consider several sentencing principles which showed a fine was appropriate in his case, and relied too heavily on the fact that the assault took place on the compound of a police station. He also complained that the magistrate did not consider his guilty plea, his clean criminal record, or the fact that he had no lawyer and showed compassion and apologised to the police for his behaviour.

Glenn was arrested and charged after he sped into the San Raphael police station and rained blows on Shervon Le Blanc, who was on the premises. He claimed Le Blanc had tried to run him off the road, but it was later discovered that the source of contention between the two men was a woman who left LeBlanc for Glenn. Glenn and the woman are now in a stable common-law relationship, and Soo Hon said the court considered the glowing recommendations presented on his behalf and the fact that he was an illustrious young farmer. She also said it was a one-off incident and complimented the State for not resisting the appeal on sentence. Before varying his sentence, Soo Hon advised him not to get into trouble over women. He was given four days to pay the $200 fine, since it would take a couple of days for the file to be transferred from the Arima court.
