Youth learn to grow the food they eat

Encouraging children to get into agriculture at an early age was part of the philosophy behind Mason Hall Police Youth Club which, in conjunction with the Tobago Agricultural Society, engaged members in an agricultural project on April 20 at the Mason Hall Y- Zone facility.

The Agricultural Society also took the opportunity to launch their Grow What You Eat, Eat What You Grow, campaign to enourage Tobagonians to support local producers and farmers. President of the Society, Micheson Neptune, said the campaign is about developing food sustainability in Tobago and the venture would involve all Police Youth Clubs on the island.

Leader of the Mason Hall Police Youth Club, Dexter Edwards, said that the project is part of the club’s ideology of exposing members to different activities.

Edwards also said that the project was part of a larger initiative to launch a home garden competition among youth club members this month.

The members were given theory and practical lessons on the nutritional value of plants and crops, and cultivation of crops.

The Society donated the plants -sweet peppers, parsley, string beans, ginger and sweet potatoes - for planting by the youth club members.
