Warrant issued for engineer

A WARRANT of arrest has been issued for an engineer who failed to attend the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Port of Spain Magistrate Sanara Toon issued the warrant for William Burley, 30, of One Woodbrook Place and ordered that on his arrest, no bail be granted. Burley and two company directors were arrested on Wednesday night by Cpl Sunil Bharath at Stone Street, Woodbrook. Field sobriety tests on the three showed their blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Skahti Rampersad, director at D Rampersad Contracting and Engineering Service Ltd, and Arnold Noranjan, director at Ernst & Young, have since pleaded guilty. They asked to be sent to Arrive Alive’s driver-education meetings before they are sentenced on May 17. The request was granted.

Burley and Rampersad were slightly over the legal limit with breathalyzer readings of 45 and 48 micrograms, respectively, while Niranjan’s reading was 70 micrograms. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.
