Arima borough council: He lifted education in region
The Arima borough council mourned the late president George Maxwell Richards, but hailed his work as a university educator whose influence has spread to the whole region.
A council statement said Arima mayor Lisa Morris Julian and the council were deeply saddened by Richards’ passing of Richards, “an avid academic, humanitarian and cultural advocate.” The council recognises his work in establishing and running many national companies, organisations and professional societies.
“Most noteworthy is his work to develop the initial structure of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus.
“It is a remarkable feat that an instructor can positively influence a field for the region in the way that Professor Richards did.”
Most importantly, the council thanked Richards for teaching that true leadership is about service to the people especially by socialising with them. “The council recalls fond memories of the former president and his sheer love and full participation in the nation’s culture and its festivals.
“The Arima Borough Council again expresses grief during this time and it wishes to extend condolences to the Richard’s family during their time of bereavement.”
