Patience is a virtue

THE EDITOR: I took on board the moaning of an Opposition member that her constituents had not, as yet, received financial compensation for the last flooding disaster in TT. Wednesday we had more rain and flooding of private property. I also take on board worrying statements that this government is constrained to borrow to pay the monthly salaries of public sector workers.

What is the first essential? The monthly salaries of 89,000 head of households? The replacement of household items and cash compensation for the effects of heavy rain sent by Mother Nature, exacerbated by poor personal behaviour? Compensation for farmers for $250,000 losses?

We are no longer dripping in oil money. How many governments in the entire world are supposed to provide you with a free fridge, cooker, washing machine and furniture every rainy season? I am not against anyone being compensated but a little extra patience would not go unnoticed.

The unspoken inference that the People’s National Movement Government is wicked and uncaring does not hold water (pardon the pun). That is playing petty politics with the distress of all the various suffering constituents.

The 89,000 families who need to be paid “come hell or high water” must appreciate the sacrifice of the rest of the country and give value for money when they arrive at their taxpayer-paid employment.
