Zimbabwe, free at last
THE EDITOR: Celebrations continue in the streets and homes of thousands of Zimbabweans, President Robert Mugabe who was that country’s leader for 37 years has resigned after being pressured to do so by the people. This country, once rich with natural resources,a booming agricultural sector and human capital, experienced the disappearing of this under the leadership on Mugabe. With a very high inflation rate, 25 per cent of the citizens needing food and some 72 per cent living in poverty no wonder they are crying out for change.
Robert Mugabe and team have mismanaged the economy of that country. The facts are there for all to see. As a leader, he was autocratic, undemocratic and oppressive as the citizens lived in fear, unable to speak freely for if found speaking against Mugabe and his regime, their lives could be endangered. I rejoice with Zimbabwe for no people were meant to be treated this way, blocked from fulfilling your dream of creating a better life for yourself and family, while he and his colleague lived the good life.
Someone new in the name of Emmerson Mnangagwa will take his place and I do hope with all the promises being made that they are kept. No one will put a leader or government to take charge for the worse; they do so for the improvement of their lives. The people of Zimbabwe brought to life the words of one of singing legend Bob Marley: “Get up, get up stand up for your right, don’t give up the fight.” Let us continue praying for Zimbabwe for this is a beginning of a new day for them.
