One small step

THE EDITOR: Amidst the crime of every type that has over-run our country, despite the state of the economy and the questionable decisions being made by those who represent us on the world stage; I, as a citizen of this country, find it hard to accept the continued carnage on our roadways when there is so much that can be done about it.

These preventable tragedies should no longer be accepted as one of T&T’s unfortunate “norms,” and I believe the move by the Ministry of Works and Transport and TTPS to introduce the demerit point system and red-light camera technology is one small step in the right direction that can lead to big relief in our homes. The foundation of this initiative seems to be care and accountability, some key elements that have been missing from the way we do things in our country.

While I expect that the masses may resist this change as they do many others, it is my view that this change is necessary. Reckless drivers need to be held accountable, and I’m sure that TT would rather have them held accountable for running a red light than running over another father, mother, future athlete, next world leader etc.

We want the best for our country, and that is a noble desire, but we must be willing to do what is necessary. And this demerit point system and red-light camera technology, is just that – necessary. Kudos to those responsible.
