A breach of promise

THE EDITOR: It was interesting to see a report in yesterday’s Newsday of a case brought by a young woman against the man who she expected to marry. Very unusual these days.

As those who are familiar with the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Trial By Jury will recognise, this is a case of breach of promise. However, in this case, there is no indication that the judge delivered a judgment which ended, “Throw your briefs upon the shelf, I will marry her myself.”
