[UPDATED] 7 shot dead, 8 injured in gun attacks in 72 hours
Gun violence over the last 72 hours have claimed the lives of seven men and left eight others, including two children, injured.
Police in Central, Arima, Port of Spain, Laventille, Diego Martin, Sangre Grande were called to action between Thursday night and 2 pm Saturday to respond to instances of violent shootings.
In the latest incident, which occurred at Kelly Village, Caroni shortly after 2 pm, four people were shot. A man identified Narindra Sinanan, also called Scars,was killed and three others wounded in a gun attack.
According to a police report, Sinanan, a businessman, was washing his van in front of his home at Airport Boulevard when two armed men alighted from an approaching car and opened fire.
Sinanan ran into his home and the men pursued him shooting him several times. police said. His neighbour and his two children, aged seven and eight, were also shot. The shooters escaped in a waiting vehicle.
The four victims were taken to the Mt Hope hospital where Sinanan died from his injuries. The other victims are being treated. Police said 33 spent shells comprising 5.56 and 9mm rounds were recovered at the scene.
In Sangre Grande, two men were shot at Picton Road Extension shortly after 11.30 pm on Friday.
Police said Sayam Thompson and Rondell Joseph were injured in that incident and Joseph died at hospital early Saturday. Thompson remains in a critical condition at hospital.
And in a daring move, two men were shot repeatedly just outside the Inter-Agency Task Force at Fort Chacon base, Picton Road, Laventille on Friday night.
Police said Nigel Dubarry, also known as Mokin, of Despers Drive, Laventille and Stanfield Allers, known as Ouse, of Picton Road, Laventille were repeatedly shot around 7.30 pm.
According to police reports, Dubarry and Allers were standing near Pepe's shop at the corner of Despers Drive and Picton Road, Laventille when a silver Nissan Almera drove up and two armed men emerged and opened fire.
Both suspects fled in the waiting car heading north along Picton Road. Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force led by Ag Sgt Wayne Praimdass took the two injured men to the Port of Spain General Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival at 7.55 pm.
Acting Sgt Parris along with acting Sgt Matthew of the Besson Street Police Station were among the officers of visited Homicide Bureau Region 1.
In an unrelated incident, officers of the North Eastern Division and the Homicide Bureau are investigating two murders which happened in two separate incidents between Thursday night and Friday morning.
In the first incident officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force received a report of gunshots at Bushe Street, San Juan at around 9.47 pm and went to the area where they found Kevin Duberry, 24, bleeding from gunshot injuries.
Police took Duberry to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he was declared dead.
Hours later at around 3.20 am on Friday police received a report of gunshots in Toncabean Hill, Pipiol Road, Santa Cruz.
Police went to the area where they found Jesse Ramcharan, 20, bleeding in his house.
A district medical officer visited the area and declared Ramcharan dead.
Police said up to Friday morning they had no information to suggest the two murders were related.
Arima police are investigating an incident which took place at Jacob Hill, Wallerfield on Friday night where five people were shot and man identified as Isaiah Pritchard, also called Project, was shot in the head at Gokool Street, Diego Martin and listed in a critical condition at hospital. Police did not provide any further information on these two other incidents.
Last weekend, fifteen people were shot dead between Friday and Saturday, including a quadruple murder of four men in Maracas, a triple police-related shooting at Independence Square, Port of Spain and another police killing in Morvant.
The police killings triggered violent street protests on July 4, as residents of Sea Lots, Beetham Gardens, East Port of Spain and Morvant burned tyres and other debris in the road. Police were able to clear the debris and restore order within two hours of the incident.
Both the Police Complaints Authority and the police are investigating the circumstances in which Fabien Richards, 21, Leonardo Williams and Isaiah Roberts, both 17 were shot dead. Three other young men who were in the car have been released from custody.
Police claimed the men were being pursued from Cocorite and they tried to escape by driving along a one-way on Independence Square before crashing into Republic Bank, at the corner of Chacon Street, where they were shot. Police claimed a gun was found in the car.
