Belmont man charged with murder

A 20-year-old Belmont man is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate on Wednesday charged with murder.

A police media release on Wednesday said Hasani Baker, of Upper Maryland Hill, Belmont, was charged with the murder of Belmont businessman Lawrence Charles on Tuesday.

He was charged by PC Pierre of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I after receiving instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard.

Charles, 36, was shot and killed outside his businessplace in a part of Belmont known as Beecham Coco.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Shortly after the shooting, police in the area saw a blue Nissan Almera speeding along the street. They intercepted it near the St Ann's roundabout and one of the passengers was found to have a gunshot wound.

The wounded man was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital and the other two passengers were arrested and questioned.
