Nine homeless after fire in Couva

Nine people, including an elderly couple, have been left homeless after a fire at the family’s home near a service station in Couva.

One of the victims, Marcia Cumberbatch, looked on from the road as fire officers put out the flames on Wednesday.

"It looks like we have lost everything. I got a call while at work and came," Cumberbatch said. "We have to wait for the officer to finish before we go inside to assess the damage."

She aid the fire was thought to have started in a bedroom at the back. "

There were no injuries," she said.

Among the homeless are her parents, who are both in their 70s, a three-year-old child and two teenage boys.

"One of them attends secondary school and the other is at university," Cumberbatch said.

Reports are tha the fire broke out shortly before midday at the two-storey concrete house at Old Southern Main Road in McBean, a stone’s throw from the Unipet Service Station. It quickly spread and burnt other parts of the house and household articles.

Fire personnel were contacted and fire station officer Samuel, fire sub-officers Bobb and Mundo responded along with colleagues from the Savonetta and Couva fire stations.

They contained the blaze and the service station was not affected.

Officials from TT Electricity Commission also went to the scene.

The cause is yet to be determined.
