[UPDATED] New Grant man gunned down
Six years after a young mother died of a brain tumour, tragedy has once again struck a Princes Town family, with the shooting death of her brother on Sunday.
Dead is Nicano Mohammed, 24, who lived at Hindustan in New Grant, on the outskirts of Princes Town. Mohammed, a construction worker, left home at about 7.30 pm and went a few houses away to visit a friend. About half an hour later, people nearby heard gunshots and contacted the police. They found Mohammed unconscious with gunshots wounds.
The injured Mohammed was taken to the Princes Town Health Facility, where he died.
Speaking at the family’s home on Monday, his brother Samuel David was unable to say if Mohammed any enemies.
“I don’t think any threats were made against him or anything like that. “About 30 minutes after he left, we got the news. We heard he was shot about 14 times. I was not there,” David said.
Mohammed was not married and had no children.
Sgt Richardson Elvin and other police from the Homicide Bureau Region III and the Princes Town station visited the scene and spoke to several people. No one has been arrested.
Mohammed and David’s sister Rachel McNish-Procope died in December 2014, aged 28. Five years earlier, in 2009, she accidentally smothered her baby after the effects of her medication for seizures caused her to fall asleep while cradling the child in her arms. McNish-Procope had woken up and found the baby unresponsive with blood around his nose. Princes Town District Health Facility doctors declared him dead.
Back in 2009, she told Newsday that since she was 11 years old she had been having fits.
