Alcohol and gas stations

THE EDITOR: In many gas stations around Trinidad, signs are displayed, “Alcohol and Driving Do not Mix.” This is seen above the gas pump. However, in the station itself, beers are available.

The sign "COLD BEERS" can be seen on the front glass wall of the station’s shop. In Port of Spain, one gas station has a glamorised sign, "BEER CAVE." So what really is the message? “Do not drink and drive” or “we have cold beers available”?

Is it assumed that drivers who buy beers would not succumb to the temptation of drinking while driving? For Christmas and New Year’s is it wise for gas stations to sell alcohol? In my view, they should not sell alcohol at all.

Let’s face it. People usually buy from the gas station for immediate use. There are so many other items gas stations can sell. What about basic parts and accessories for vehicles. Gas stations can also act as distributors for small businesses and manufacturing companies that cater to the automotive industry.

They can also provide clean, public toilets for a fee to the travelling public. Owners and managers of these gas stations should reconsider selling alcohol. We must all do our part to minimise road accidents.
