Perform your civic duty

THE EDITOR: Public Officers will have the opportunity this Monday to choose a new Executive to seek their interest in the upcoming PSA elections. An exercise as important as this should have those who work in the public service buzzing with excitement at the possibility of fresh blood leading them in the next four years.

Sadly, this is not the case.

Having a keen interest in this exercise, I have engaged officers who are at best showed nothing more than apathy for the process. This is by extension the atmosphere that pervades this country when it comes to politics. While there may be many mitigating factors contributing to this phenomena, it stands to reason that the incumbent leaders seem to enjoy this disenchantment felt by the wider population. In this winner takes all system, it doesn’t matter how much people vote for you, once you win, you in charge and the rest could suck salt. In fact, this attitude seems to be vigorously cultivated by those in charge.

This disheartening development cannot be allowed to continue. In the elections to be held Monday, I have and continue to implore public servants to do their civic duty. They need to understand the strategy that has been used by those who lead us to disassociate us from our inherent power.

People must shake off their mental weariness and realise that their votes can only push the PSA up! They have choices which, if they choose wisely, will propel the union upward and reconcile them with their true inherent power. Do not let those in charge enjoy the fruits of your labour without having to fight for it and more importantly account to you the people. The PSA as it exists is a ghost of what it was and needs a push up!

So to my fellow PSA members, take back your right and let your voice be heard Monday! Comrades once you do the right thing the only way to go is UP!
