$50,000 bail for alleged Facebook rapist
The 23-year-old man who allegedly raped a woman whom he befriended on Facebook has been granted $50,000 bail by a Chaguanas magistrate.
Sheldon McIntosh, 23, appeared yesterday before senior magistrate Jo-Anne Connor in the first court. It is alleged that on October 31 at Montrose, Chaguanas, McIntosh had sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent.
WPC Alicia Joseph of the Central Division CID laid the charge which laid indictably. The accused man was not called to enter a plea.
Attorney Taradath Singh represented McIntosh, a labourer of Maraj Street, Chaguanas.
Singh told the court his client had no pending matters and no previous convictions of a similar nature.
He said McIntosh had three previous convictions for narcotics-related offences and was fined for each.
It is alleged the accused and the 22-year-old alleged victim became friends on Facebook during a two-week period. On October 31, the Morvant woman allegedly agreed to meet him at a house in Chaguanas to collect tickets for a boat ride. It is alleged that while at the house, he sexually assaulted her. He was arrested by police on Wednesday last week.
The matter has been adjourned to December 4.
