President of the TT Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) Lynsley Doodhai expressed concern yesterday about the closure of the Malick Secondary School pending repairs, but said the school was in urgent need of restoration.

Newsday spoke to Doodhai who said the school was closed several weeks before the ministry’s official announcement of the repairs last week and he was eager to have it reopened for the benefit of students. “Of course, this is something that TTUTA is very much concerned about. While I understand that the works could have been done during the July-August period, I am happy that something is finally being done on the issue.”

This week, I believe, repairs are to be done to the roof of the staff room and to restore electricity to certain parts of the school. So we are looking forward to having it reopened by next week.”

Doodhai said teachers at the school withdrew their services until the necessary repairs were made. He also expressed TTUTA’s support of the Health and Family Life Education school programmes and said students should be taught the dangers of substance abuse, emphasising the importance of the ministry’s anti-drug campaign.
