Expressions is the theme of artist Laura Nicole’s upcoming exhibition at the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago, Federation Park. The exhibition will open on October 8.

“My wish is for everyone who attends, is to immerse themselves in the work. These are evocative pieces that reflect my artistic evolution,” Laura Nicole said in a media release.

Laura Nicole’s name is no different from her given name, except she does not use her surname Simonette when she is in artistic mode. But for some, she may be called “Miss” as she taught art at East Mucurapo Secondary School, the release said.

She is an alumna of The UWI, St Augustine, as well as the Camden School of Art and the University of Westminster – both in England.

Her creative journey goes back to 1994, when her inaugural exhibition showcased the mesmerising fusion of batik on fabric and clothing. Her dedication to textured work is a creative exploration ignited when her father became partially blind.

Since her debut solo exhibition in 2015 with her work on canvas, she has been enriched by local artists Andy Jacob, Embah, Gregory Williams, Garvin Pierre, Glen Roopchand and Jason Hospedales.

Laura Nicole has participated in the group exhibition Artists in Harmony in February 2023, at the Art Society. Her work was also displayed earlier this year at the Art Lime Gallery.

For Expressions, she is inspired by Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.

Laura Nicole’s canvas is imbued with vibrant hues and textured strokes, influenced not only by the Afro-centric art collection and clothing designs of her mother, but also by the avant-garde spirit of Jackson Pollock.

Describing her work as eclectic, she artfully blends colours and rendering styles, creating beautiful artwork that resonates with depth and emotion. Hence the theme Expression for this solo exhibit, the release said.

Expressions ends October 12.
