FORMER West Indies spinner Anisa Mohammed and all-rounder Aaliyah Alleyne have welcomed the news that Deandra Dottin will return to international cricket after stepping aside two years ago.

Dottin, 33, is one of the best players in the world with her ability to hit the ball harder than any in the women's game. She is also a capable medium pace bowler and a brilliant fielder taking spectacular catches during her career.

In July 2022, Dottin announced her retirement from international cricket.

Days ago on July 27, she had a change of heart.

Speaking to the media during the launch of the 2024 Massy Women's Caribbean Premier League on July 31, Mohammed said, "I am really excited for her. I think she still has a lot to offer to women's cricket and to West Indies cricket...she is just in time for the World Cup, so I am looking forward to that." The 2024 International Cricket Council Women's T20 World Cup will be staged in Bangladesh in October.

Dottin's absence was especially felt in the batting department. Mohammed said, "I think she was missed quite a lot, looking at our batting department she was definitely missed."

West Indies have struggled without Dottin as captain Hayley Matthews has done the bulk of the scoring.

Alleyne said, "I think for any team Deandra is a plus, so to see her come out of retirement...it is only a bonus for the West Indies team especially as we are coming up in a World Cup year."

In a letter to Cricket West Indies announcing her return, Dottin said, "Representing West Indies in international cricket has always been a matter of great pride and passion for me. After a period of reflection and thoughtful dialogue with various parties within Cricket West Indies (CWI), including CWI president, Dr Kishore Shallow, I am pleased to inform you that I am eager to return to the game that I love, and contribute my utmost to the West Indies women’s team across all formats, with immediate effect."

Dottin started playing for the West Indies in 2008.
