TRINIDAD and Tobago's Olympic campaign got under way on July 29 with swimmer Zuri Ferguson placing third in heat two of the women’s 100m backstroke.

At the Paris La Defense Arena, the 17-year-old Attleboro High School student lined up in lane six and finished in a time of 1.02.76.

Ferguson, however, did not qualify for the semifinals as the 16 fastest swimmers (38 total) advanced to semifinal one and two, which will begin at 2.57 and 3.03 pm TT time respectively on July 29.

Ferguson wasn't an automatic qualifier for the games. Still, she received a nomination from World Aquatics to compete via the universality places clause, which allows swimmers who didn't make the Olympic qualifying time – or the Olympic consideration time in some cases – to compete at the games.

Fergeson is one of two swimmers representing TT at the Olympics in Paris, with experienced campaigner Dylan Carter set to compete in the men's 50m and 100m freestyle events, which begins on July 30.
