Three transit police officers to be rewarded for gun find

Three special reserve police officers attached to the transit police have come in for special praise by head of the North Eastern Division Snr Supt Mervyn Edwards, after they discovered guns linked to a homicide investigation.

Speaking at the police's weekly press briefing, Edwards singled out Constable Neptune, Constable Baboolal and WPC Nicombe for what he described as their “keen powers of observation and dedication and devotion to duty.”

Edwards said, on September 29, the trio followed a car after they saw the driver break a traffic light on the Eastern Main Road in Barataria.

The officers stopped the car and discovered the driver had no driver's licence or car insurance.

They then searched the car and found two guns and ammunition which Edwards suggested might be linked to at least one homicide case.

He said, “I can add, the homicide bureau is pursuing other leads that will bear positive outcomes in the not-too-distant future with respect to those items that were seized by these officers."

An investigation was also launched by Asst Supt Calendar in Barataria which led police to discover that the car had been stolen in San Juan the previous week.

Edwards said the suspect faced multiple charges.

“Coming out of it, charges for the traffic offences, trafficking in firearms, possession of ammunition, larceny of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen articles (will be laid).”

Edwards said, in the coming weeks, the officers will be publicly given “tangible” rewards in recognition for their work.
