The Prime Minister, who is Caricom chairman has pledged the community’s support to St Vincent and the Grenadines as the threat of an eruption of the La Soufriere volcano looms.

In a post on his Facebook page, Dr Rowley said after an evacuation order of the immediate area around the volcano issued by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Caricom members states have offered support to house evacuees from the affected area.

Rowley, himself a vulcanologist, said the scientific team from the UWISeismic Research Centre has been in the country monitoring the volcano and rendering scientific advice to the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

He said the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has also been working alongside the St Vincent National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), the SRC and the Regional Security System (RSS).

Rowley said CDEMA has activated its regional support operation, including deploying a specialist to St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The agency, he added, is also providing technical assistance to NEMO with evacuation and logistics planning.

“The community stands with the Government and people of St Vincent and the Grenadines in this perilous situation,” he said.
