“Be vigilant, be prepared.”
That was the message the UWI Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) had for Vincentians living in “hazard areas” near the ongoing eruption at the La Soufrière volcano.
In a statement on Tuesday, the centre advised people to be vigilant, listen to official sources, be familiar with emergency protocols and to be prepared to evacuate if it becomes necessary.
Director of the centre Dr Erouscilla Joseph said that the eruption was currently effusive, not explosive, but that could change given the historical activity observed at La Soufrière.
“The possibility of this type of eruption going from effusive to explosive does exist. This volcano can show both types of eruptions. At this time, based on the information we have, the definitive timeline of this happening, or if it will happen at all, cannot be answered.”
Joseph said a hazard map was developed to show the areas that could be affected by an explosive eruption. Should an explosive eruption occur, the release said, “the danger level will change dramatically.
“The public should familiarise themselves with the hazard map and their evacuation routes...They should have emergency kits prepared and a family evacuation plan in place.”
Joseph reminded people to keep track of the latest news through the social media of official sources such as National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) and UWI SRC.
She added that, at present, the danger is limited to gasses issuing from the dome for those working on the summit. Depending on the wind direction, gases could possibly spread downwind to the surrounding communities.
