O'Young captures U15 crown at junior t-tennis

NATIONAL PLAYER Nicholas O’Young was crowned champion of the Queen’s Park Junior Table Tennis Tournament Under-15 open division when action climaxed at the club’s Racquet Centre in St Clair on Sunday.
The youngster entered the final day’s play vying for spots in the both the Under-15 and Under-18 finals.
In the Under-15 semi-final, O’Young defeated Imani Edwards-Taylor 3-1 and then battled to a 3-2 triumph over Jamali Mauge in the title match. Mauge advanced to the final by getting past Rebekah Sterling 3-0.
However, in the Under-18 division, Vasesh Ramphalie ensured O’Young would not claim double-honours as he ousted the Under-15 winner 3-2 in the semi-final.
Derron Douglas, though, was crowned U-18 winner by sweeping past Ramphalie 3-0 in the final. Previously, Douglas ousted Nicholas Lee 3-0 in the other ‘semi’.
In the Under-13 category, Malik Gopaul captured the 2020 trophy by trumping Gabriel John 3-0. Their respective semi-final bouts saw the former dig deep to overcome the group’s lone female semi-finalist Chloe Fraser 3-2 while John beat Kayode Lee 3-1.
Additionally, Jonathon Cottoy powered to the Under-11 title by cruising to a 3-1 win over Daniel Bhim. Cottoy also eliminated Joshua Bhim 3-1 while Bhim (D) eased past Yannic Lewis 3-0.
For their impressive performances and individual highlights throughout the two-day tourney, Bhim (D), Fraser, Ramphalie and Edwards-Taylor received special awards on behalf of the tournament's sponsors.
