TT students get Japan scholarships
TWO TT students have been awarded the 2020 MEXT Scholarship for studies at graduate level for two years in Japan.
Afia Boney will undertake studies in disaster-risk management at Okayama University, and Jonathan Ramtahal will study biological sciences at the University of Tsukuba.
The government of Japan, through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, also known as MEXT or Monbu-Kagaku-Shō, offers scholarships to foreign students who want to study at Japanese universities as postgraduate/research students every academic year. Successful applicants receive round-trip airfare, exemption from school fees and a monthly allowance, said a media release.
Both students are excited to start their studies in Japan, though their original departure schedules were delayed due to the covid19 pandemic. They are looking forward to immersing themselves in Japan's culture while furthering their educational goals.
Japanese Ambassador Tatsuo Hirayama met and congratulated the scholarship students at his official residence on October 12. They discussed the courses the students will be pursuing, the universities, areas of interest to be explored in Japan and even the Tokyo Olympic Games being held next year. Hirayama offered the students encouraging advice and useful information for their stay in Japan, the release said.
The MEXT scholarship programme offers students an opportunity for exchange, growth, exploration and educational development. The Embassy of Japan in TT said the programme has contributed to the established bilateral relations between Japan and TT and has further strengthened the co-operative relationship and exchanges between the two countries.
