Lowlands mall robbery suspect surrenders

One man allegedly involved in a jewellery store robbery on Monday is said to be in police custody.

According to police, men armed with guns announced a hold-up at Caribbean Jewellers Ltd at Gulf City Mall in Lowlands shortly after midday, before escaping.

Some mere hours later, it was reported that the vehicle allegedly used as the getaway car was intercepted by police in Whim, when it crashed into a light pole. Newsday understands that two teenagers, who were occupants in the said vehicle are warded at hospital following a shootout with police, one teenager was shot in the hand while the condition of the other is unknown.

The driver is said to have escaped on foot. Sources claimed a suspect walked into the Scarborough Police Station and surrendered.

One employee in a store next to Caribbean Jewellers told Newsday none of her fellow coworkers had any idea that a robbery tok place until an alarm was raised after. Expressing shock, the employee said mall employees were trau­ma­tised, as she call­ed for in­creased se­cu­ri­ty pa­trols along with the in­stal­la­tion of metal scan­ners at the var­i­ous en­trances to as­sist with de­tect­ing crim­i­nal el­e­ments op­er­at­ing in­side the mall.

When contacted, TTPS Tobago Division media ambassador Sgt Alicia Piggott said details were still sketchy as the investigating officers were still out in the field.
