All-inclusive education system is way to go
THE EDITOR: For quite some time, many in our society have been calling for equality in our education system. A system which has focused on the ability of our students to excel in academic subjects, maths, English, etc. A system that has failed to recognise the budding artist, designer, electrician, chef or mechanic.
As a result, we have witnessed the downward spiral of so many of our young people. Some of whom feel dejected and rejected by a system that makes no room for them. Some of whom feel less than that when unable to compete on the same level as those who are academically inclined.
Our President has now joined those of us calling for an “all-inclusive education system.” Where all the nation’s children are afforded the opportunity to develop their talents and/or career interests.
From as early as primary school, the emphasis is placed on that child who achieves high marks in maths, spelling, English, etc while leaving the struggling reader behind.
With SEA examinations less than three months, yet another group of students will be judged on their performances in these academic subject areas, vying for places in schools that focus on nurturing these very academic subjects. Where is our commitment to those who do not make the “mark?”
Do we just turn our backs? It is the responsibility of those in charge of the education system to ensure that it is “all-inclusive,” that all children are given the tools and support to achieve and excel in their respective goals.
We are a country in need of full restoration. What better place to look at next than our schools.
