PoS cops: Residents scrapping CGA building

The rapid destruction of a building belonging to the Citrus Growers' Association (CGA) on the Eastern Main Road in Laventille was done illegally by residents scrapping construction material at the building, police say.

Speaking with Newsday, a senior officer from the Port of Spain Division said police had received numerous reports of vandalism and theft since the compound was abandoned late last year, but only three people were arrested when they were caught in the act by members of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) earlier this month.

The officer said while the police were called in to supervise company officials removing tools and other items, they have not seen any official contractors doing demolition work and the removal of material could be attributed to residents illegally scrapping the building.

Newsday tried to contact Minister of Land, Agriculture and Fisheries Clarence Rambharat and Laventille West MP Fitzgerald Hinds for comment but was unsuccessful.
