TTPS stickmen trounce SHAPE 3-2 but lose to Queen’s Park
THE 16th Ventures’ Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament started, on Thursday night, at The UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC), St Augustine, and will roll on with a full weekend of games on the card. Today’s fixtures are slated from 8 am until 9.25 pm, and tomorrow’s games run from 9 am to 5.15 pm.
In the first round of matches in the Veterans’ (Over-35) Division from Thursday, Group A action saw TT Police Service (TTPS) experience a bittersweet night. They started off proceedings by edging SHAPE 3-2 thanks to early goals from Fernando Beatrice in the third minute, Roger Daniel in the seventh and Roshan Harrichan in the 11th. SHAPE bounced back by getting on the score sheet via Kevin Adams (17th) and Leroy Sookdeo (28th) but it wasn’t enough. TTPS, however, were then trounced by Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) later on in the night by 4-0. QPCC got items from Reiza Hosein (10th), Gary Chin (13th), Andre Attale (20th) and Rob Wyatt (24th) to seal the deal.
Action in Group B also saw TT Defence Force (TTDF) hammer Notre Dame 7-2. After TTDF went ahead in the first minute thanks to Anthony Morales, Gregory Garraway equalised for the opposition a minute later, before Nicholas Wren put Notre Dame ahead again in the fifth. Aaron McKenzie added two in the eighth and 14th for Notre Dame to go 4-1 up before Joel Legendre pulled another back for Notre Dame. However, Wren made it four for the night as he then powered home three more in the 20th, 23rd and 26th to claim an empathic victory.
In Men’s Group A action, QPCC beat Malvern 3-1. After Aidan De Gannes put QPCC ahead in the 15th, Daniel Beer restored parity in the 21st, before Jordan Reynos (28th) and Marcus Pascal (30th) claimed the win for the Parkites. TTDF then hammered TTPS 7-2 with Marcus James in the fourth and Nicholas Wren in the eighth putting them 2-0 up. Wayne Leggerton equalised for Police in the 11th but goals from Marcus Campbell in the 14th, three more from James in the 17th, 18th, 28th, and one for good measure from Javon Woodward in the 28th put the nail in the Police coffin. Solomon Eccles got a late consolation in the 30th, but it was a mere formality at that point.
In Group B, Paragon took apart QPCC II by 5-1. They went down to a Michael Durity strike in the 14th, but responded with five unanswered. Akim Toussaint (15th, 30th) and Joel Daniel (19th, 24th) netted a double each, with Kelon Skerrit in the 21st adding to the rout.
Women’s action in Group A saw Notre Dame easily overcoming UWI 3-0 thanks to goals from Kayla Brathwaite in the 13th and 21st, and one from Tahirah Wynne (30th). In Group B, Magnolias Pink topped TTPS 4-2 thanks to items from Brittney Hingh, a double from Savannah De Freitas and one more from Kaitlyn Olton.
