Brooker, Frost top Ortoire River Race
BAJAN Stanley Brooker won the long course race at the 9th annual Maritime Ortoire River Race hosted by the Trinidad Kayak Club. The race, which was held recently, was sanctioned by the TT Canoeing and Rowing Federation.
Brooker won the 14K race in one hour, 14 minutes and 37 seconds, ahead of six Trinidad athletes. In second place was 22 year old Nicholas Robinson who finished just under two minutes behind Brooker in 1:16.30. Former winner of the long course (2016) and two-time ex- short course (7K) champ (2011 and 2012) Sherlon Pierre, 22, was third in 1:19.42.
The short course title was won by 17 year old Michael Frost from 3rd Trinidad Sea Scouts (3TSS) in 52 minutes and 43 second. Veteran Hugh Harris came in second in 53 minutes and 39 seconds. Female athlete Ayana Skeete placed third overall, just three seconds behind Harris.
Among the 76 participants, there were youths as young as 13 competing (Asher Brewster), several women and five seniors over 60 years old.
Organiser Trinidad Kayak Club expressed thanks to title sponsor The Maritime Financial Group, and also hailed the contributions of the National Lotteries Control Board, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Kia Motors, Phoenix Park Gas Processors Ltd; and the donation of the prizes of two tickets to Barbados for the long course winners, and two tickets to Tobago for the short course winners from Superl Travel Service Ltd.
