Suspect in Lucas killing released
THE only suspect in the stabbing death of father of five Dillon Lucas has been released from police custody.
San Fernando Homicide division confirmed the suspect was released from custody on Thursday, a day after he was discharged from hospital. Lucas, 31, was liming with friends at Cloud 9 nightclub in Debe around 2 am last Sunday when Kailash Seepersad got into an argument with a man.
Seepersad told Newsday that the man was harassing his female friends and he asked him to stop. Instead, the man pulled out a knife and stabbed Seepersad on his left hand.
Lucas intervened and both men started scuffling. Minutes later, Lucas dropped to the ground, bleeding from cuts and a stab to his chest. He died on arrival at San Fernando General Hospital later that day.
An autopsy on Monday showed Lucas died from a stab wound to the right side of his chest which caused internal bleeding. The suspect who was also stabbed during the altercation, was warded under police guard before being discharged.
Speaking from his St Mary’s, Moruga home yesterday Lucas’ older brother Devon Lucas said he was confused and concerned at the suspect’s release. He said he does not understand why the man was not charged for Lucas’ murder.
“I don’t understand how they could just release him. Tell me if you are going to a nightclub to have a good time, why are you walking with a long kitchen knife in your waist? That is devil behaviour right there…and he didn’t just stab Dilly, he stabbed the other young boy in his hand too, so he look like he would have just stabbed anybody who cross his path that night,” Lucas said.
Devon said his mother Angela Lucas, 63, has been having a very hard time dealing with her son's death. “Our father died when we were little and our mother raised us herself. She is not taking this easy at all, I am trying to be strong for my family but we need answers.”
