ICT training for teachers long overdue
THE EDITOR: I saw in the news that more than 500 secondary school teachers have completed training in information and communications technology (ICT) with a view to integrate technology into their teaching and learning methodologies when conducting classes. This is great news.
As a teacher I can tell you that our students today have easy access to technology and this has placed great demands on the school administration.
I applaud the Education Ministry for responding to these demands by training more teachers so as to equip them with the skills to integrate technology into their teaching and learning methodologies.
Our students are very familiar with their smartphones and other smart devices, thus this type of training is long overdue to help teachers use the technology to inspire creativity and innovation in our students.
Teachers must be empowered and enthused to do things differently and change the way they teach. They are in a position to help reform not only their classrooms but the school community and ultimately the education system.
I am aware there were many attempts in the past to introduce ICT in the classroom. Thousands of computers were given to students, teachers and school supervisors but the critical aspect of training was not on the front burner of the ministry.
Training of teachers in ICT is a welcome gesture. I hope the ministry will extend the opportunity to primary school teachers as well.
