Laptops plancommendable
THE EDITOR: I commend the Education Ministry on its decision to provide laptops to all secondary schools for the start of the school year in September.
I am also pleased to learn that the ministry has provided hundreds of teachers with ICT training to enable them to teach their students computer literacy and to use the laptops for academic subjects. It is also good that students will not be allowed to take home the laptops, which was the case in the past and which resulted in some students using the computers for non-academic activities, defeating the purpose of them having the laptops.
Keeping the over 13,000 high-quality laptops in the schools could also ensure they remain in good working condition, which did not happen before. When students were allowed to take their laptops home some were badly damaged, to the point where they could not be used again. That was a case of plenty money going down the drain.
The ministry would still be playing its part in providing a good education for the secondary school students with this high-tech initiative, ensuring that they are prepared to handle the challenges of a 21st century technological age.
