Police told to give statements

NALINEE SEELAL

OFFICERS from a police station in Western Division have been asked to provide statements to officers of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) who are probing an incident last Friday in which the wife of a former government minister was charged for traffic offences.

The female officer who laid the charge took to social media and released a voice note in which she made certain allegations. The voice note went viral on the weekend prompting the former Government minister to issue a retraction on the allegations made by the officer. Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams has since ordered a full scale probe and assigned PSB officers to investigate the female officer’s conduct.

The officer who has about four years’ service has not reported for duty since the voice note was posted online. Yesterday, sources confirmed that officers of the PSB asked colleagues of the female officer for statements to verify the authenticity of allegations made by the female officer in her voice note.

Up until yesterday the female officer was not yet interviewed by the PSB. Newsday understands the officer may have violated the Oath to Secrecy which is contained in the Police Service Act. Yesterday, president of the Police Social and Welfare Association, Acting ASP Michael Seales said: “The Association is committed to the investigation to unearth the truth in this matter and is lending its support to the officer as she has submitted herself to the process.”
