Trini cake is best in world
Michelle Sohan, the CEO and founder of Bakery Treatz, has been awarded the Best Cake taste in the World 2017.
The Trinidadian won the award at the Cake Designer’s World Championship in Rho, Italy earlier this week.
Sohan posted the award as well as the pictures of the winning cake on her Facebook page on October 25. In that post, she thanked the Federation of International Pastry, Gelato and Chocolate Campionato Mondiale FIPGC for including TT in the competition.
Sohan has done work featuring Olympic gold medallist, Keshorn Walcott and was a “celebrity” judge at the Mother’s Day Battle of Desserts at Trincity Mall.
Sohan, along with international Californian cake master coach Kathleen Lange created the best cake taste using cocoa from the TT’s Cocoa Research Unit.
In her post, she described the design of the cake as, “represent[ing] our local heritage with cocoa dancers, coffee and cocoa paintings of workers in the fields, the nice and shiny chocolate bon bons, with techniques such as cocoa butter painting, chocolate sculptures, various hand-piping styles, edible stained glass, figurines…”
The theme’s competition this year was Discovering Chocolate and Coffee.
Sohan whose Bakery Treatz is located at Rodney Road, Lange Park, Chaguanas, has done cakes based on traditional Indian wear and even holiday-themed cakes such as for Eid and even did one with legendary mas man Peter Minshall’s Tan Tan and Saga Boy designs for the mas man’s 75th birthday.
The cake artist, who said she began baking “purely by accident,” said of her accomplishment: “What an experience!!! As I settle down, the adrenaline rush subsided, I can finally share some of my thoughts! Firstly, there’s so much to be thankful for, never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought I would be here, in Italy, at such a huge competition!”
In her post she also hoped she could bring most of it back to TT. Let’s hope she truly can.
