A total of 71 vendors who sell on High Street, San Fernando will soon receive vendor's badges.

Last week, the San Fernando City Corporation banned all vending on High Street until further notice. The mayor, Junia Regrello, said this was because of the “rapidly increasing” number of unauthorised vendors.

He had told Newsday that last year, he met with the Clothing Vendors' Association and they agreed the 63 registered vendors could sell there.

"We extended the period for Christmas," he said, "which saw the number of vendors move to over 200. There are now over 300.

“It's against this background that the association was called in, where they were told that the council made a decision to temporarily terminate vending, and requested a list of the regular vendors who we would authorise going forward."

In a social media post on Wednesday, Regrello said he visited High Street with an engineer and the Vendors’ Association president Eastlyn Joseph. He said they identified the 71 designated spaces for vendors.

They also had agreement from president of the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce Kiran Singh, who had consultations with business owners on High Street, to go ahead with marking spaces in the road.

He added, “The San Fernando City Corporation thanks members of the public for their patience and is hopeful that the issues faced by store owners, traffic and police officers will be resolved with this hiatus on vending.”
