With schools ordered shut until April 20 as part of this country’s efforts to stop the spread of covid19, Christa Boban is providing free online classes for fifth form students to continue preparing for their upcoming CSEC exams.
“I realised that some students would be out of school and need guidance.
“I wanted to lend a helping hand and do as much as possible. As a mother and wife my time is limited but what time I could offer I provide it.”
Boban has taught CAPE and CSEC Biology at the Arete Institute of Science and has privately tutored the subject for over eight years. She also has 13 years of teaching service at the preschool level.
To date, 30 students have accessed her free online classes in CSEC biology, HSB, physics and chemistry. Using the video conferencing services of online platform Zoom, the classes are held every Sunday from 12 pm to 2 pm and each subject session lasts no more than 30 minutes.
WhatsApp groups have also been created for each subject where past paper questions are answered, and video tutorials are posted.
“During the week, when I can, I post taped videos of myself teaching a topic, in each subject. Every day I would try my best to do two videos.”
Students interested in the free classes or parents who wish to get in touch on behalf of their children can call or WhatsApp Boban at 736-4266. Once enrolled, students will be added to the appropriate subjects’ WhatsApp group where links to each Sundays’ Zoom session and instructions on how to use the Zoom platform will be posted.
The online classes run until the end of April but when covid19 restrictions are lifted, she hopes to provide classes in a physical setting.
