Two sentenced for killing cop

TWO men have been sentenced to a little over 13 years in prison for the murder of police officer Chris Bharath more than a decade ago.

Devon Walker and Kernell Charles were sentenced by Justice Norton Jack at the Port of Spain High Court.

Walker was sentenced to seven years and 22 days while Charles was sentenced to six years, six months and 25 days. Both sentences were imposed with hard labour.

The men pleaded guilty to felony murder in November, after a maximum sentence indication hearing was done by Jack.

Their guilty plea and the time they have spent in custody were considered by the judge who made the necessary deductions to his starting point sentence of 28 years for each man.

Charles was sentenced last year while Walker was sentenced on Friday.

Bharath, 33, of Edinburgh 500, was walking along St. Vincent Street, Port of Spain, on February 9, 2008, when he was stabbed by two men.

He died at the scene.

Walker and Charles were subsequently charged with murder by then Insp Ancil Corbett.

Prosecutors Veonna Neale-Monroe and Rea Libert appeared for the State.
