“They were gunned down”

This was all relatives of Joshima Oxley, one of the three men killed by police on Thursday, had to say when approached by reporters yesterday.

Oxley, 25, of Bagatelle, Diego Martin, along with 17-year-old Kirk Stewart of Upper La Puerta Road, Diego Martin, and 25-year old Akile Mc Gilvery of Four Roads, were shot dead by police during an alleged exchange of gunfire on Broome Street Extension, La Puerta Road.

Oxley’s relatives would not say much else to the media, except that they had been told the three men did not shoot at the police.

The men’s families were at the Forensic Science Centre in St James, awaiting the results of autopsies. Police said at about 11.40 am on Thursday, members of the Western Division Task Force intercepted a car after receiving information that its occupants had guns.

They said when they approached the car, the men pulled out guns, but one jammed, and police shot the men. Two of the three died on the spot, and the third died at hospital while being treated.

Police later foundtwo pistols and an Uzi sub-machine gun. They told Newsday the men were known to them, and they had affiliations with a major gang in the west.

Stewart, Oxley and Mc Gilvery are the first three victims of a fatal shooting involving police for the year.
