Three sentenced to hang for fruit vendor's murder

Three men have been sentenced to hang for the 2009 murder of Cunupia fruit vendor Glenroy “Sleepy” Glasgow.

Randy Marcano, Eshton “Ashton” Bowen, and Roger “Panman” Edwards were on trial before Justice Malcolm Holdip in the Port of Spain Second Criminal court, charged with Glasgow’s murder on July 8, 2009. Glasgow was chopped 28 times and shot at his home, which was a shed, at the corner of Madras Road and Chin Chin Junction, Cunupia.

According to the State’s case, which was led by prosecutors Nigel Pilgrim and Whitney Charles, at about 1.30 am, Glasgow was asleep with his girlfriend, Leslie Ann Ali, at his shed when Ali felt someone pulling at her hair. It was Edwards.

She also saw Marcano and Bowen beating Glasgow and saw Bowen begin to chop him.

According to Ali, Marcano then handed Bowen a gun and he shot Glasgow three times in the head before all three men ran away.

Ali went to a neighbour’s house for help, but after receiving none, she called the police on her mobile phone.

In a statement to police later that morning, she said she did not know the people who entered the shed and killed Glasgow.

In a second statement – she gave five in all – Ali told police she did not tell them everything that happened because she was afraid for her life. She said she had known the three men for about nine years, as they were regular customers in her cousin’s bar.

Bowen and Edwards, when questioned by police, denied knowing anything about the murder. They were arrested and charged on September 4, 2009. Marcano was arrested on January 10, 2010, and was identified by Ali.

Marcano gave a statement to police, also denying any involvement in the murder.

The men were represented at trial by attorneys Osbourne Charles, SC, Frank Peterson and John Heath.
