Prison officer charged for contraband on prison compound

A PRISON OFFICER was granted $200,000 bail when he appeared before a Master of the High Court on January 21, charged with the possession of a dangerous drug – marijuana.
Jirome Walters was charged with the offence as he appeared before Master Franklin of the High Court.
He was granted bail and the matter was adjourned to February 20.
Police said they searched the Maximum Security Prison, Arouca on January 15 and found Walters acting in a suspicious manner.
They searched a vehicle he had rented and found three packages containing 540 grammes of marijuana and a quantity of cigarettes in the driver's seat. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $16,200.
Walters was charged by officers of the Special Investigations Unit with possession of marijuana contrary to Section 5 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, Chapter 11:25.
On January 14, another prison officer was granted $75,000 bail bail when he appeared before a Master of the High Court charged with possession of contraband items contrary to Section 8 (1) (f) of the Prisons Act, as amended by Act 25 of 2019.
