[UPDATED] Tobago jewellery store robbed, security guard badly beaten
THE Caribbean Jewellers store at Lowlands Mall in Tobago has been robbed for the second time in four years.
Newsday understands that two masked men entered the jewellery store shortly before 11 am on August 14 and announced a hold-up.
A 29-second video shared via social media showed two men in construction hats and safety jackets. One of the men was seen kicking and stamping the security guard on his head, while the other was seen leaving the back of the store with a black garbage bag.
The security guard was taken to Scarborough General Hospital for treatment. His condition is not yet known.
When Newsday visited the mall on August 14, it was business as usual with the only establishment closed being Caribbean Jewellers.
Mall management said they were aware of the incident. However, they declined to comment on that or the increase in criminal activities on the island.
Workers at nearby businesses, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they had just opened their doors and noticed nothing unusual during the time of the incident.
Several shoppers at the mall, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the increase in crime had left them scared.
“The crime situation is frightening now, it’s just too much. I really don’t know what else.”
Another shopper said: “The situation is getting from bad to worse, the island’s crime situation has to be addressed. There is need for some kind of intervention.
“Crime is taking a horrible twist, and police will start to shoot and kill soon – the situation is deplorable. Every day you have to look out for something negative – what is going on with my little island?”
“Innocent bystanders could have been affected had it escalated, these young people don’t want to work but want everything fast.”:
The shopper said she thought twice before coming to the mall, after hearing about the incident.
“These young people are making everywhere unsafe now. This act was committed brazen.”
Newsday made several attempts to contact management of Caribbean Jewellers but all calls to its managing director were unanswered.
