THE Prime Minister says the population can soon look forward to an upgraded Port of Spain General Hospital (PoSGH) and increased domestic production of fresh vegetables.

Dr Rowley made those comments at the PNM's Diego Martin West 51st annual constituency conference on August 3.

Referring to the ongoing construction of a new central block at PoSGH, Rowley said, "In a few months, in this very difficult period we will be able to open in the early part of next year a brand new 530 bed hospital in Port of Spain in the central tower."

The Urban Development Corporation of TT (Udecott) is for this project.

Rowley said an important aspect of reducing the annual cost of health care is the promotion of healthy lifestyles, including a proper diet, in the population.

He added that he was pleased to learn that the first group of crops have been sown under the Shade project in Chaguaramas.

An initiative under the Youth Development and National Service Ministry, the project involves he use of 26 acres of land in Chaguaramas, under the remit of the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA), for agricultural purposes.

Rowley, who is a registered farmer, said, "Very soon large volumes of fresh vegetables at affordable prices will be available from the west going east and going central."

He encouraged the population purchase and consume this produce when it becomes available.

"There is nothing better than fresh vegetables in your diet."
